Le Tableau Performé l The Performed Tableau

Self-taught artist Myriam Chastagnier has spent more than twelve years developing a body of work in which photography becomes a site for testing representation itself. Through meticulously staged constructions, she appropriates and subverts the visual language of 1950s –1960s advertising to reveal the cultural mechanisms that shape perception and condition the act of looking.
Each photograph is the result of a carefully orchestrated process in which custom-built sets and props, lighting, and the direction of performers converge to create a richly saturated visual language drawing equally from cinema, theatre, and staged photography.
Each image unfolds as a condensed fiction, somewhere between a photo novel and a performative tableau, where the familiar imperceptibly slips into ambiguity. Beneath the apparent lightness of these narratives emerge the tensions of desire, dynamics of domination, mechanisms of control, gender stereotypes, and the paradoxes of consent.
At the core of this investigation lies the artistic partnership she has developed with her recurring performer and collaborator, Adrian. Together, they have established a genuine experimental protocol in which the boundaries between play and reality are deliberately unsettled. Their staged scenarios construct a space of uncertainty, inviting viewers to question their own projections, cultural references, and interpretive frameworks.
Myriam Chastagnier’s work neither seeks to persuade nor to denounce. Instead, it cultivates a lasting sense of perceptual unease. By re-enacting the visual codes of seduction, romantic comedy, and domestic imagery, she transforms the photographic image into a perceptual device in which the gaze itself becomes simultaneously subject, material, and experience.
